KISU has just installed its own bespoke LEGO INNOVATION STUDIO housing more than $20,000 worth of LEGO equipment from "DUPLO" building bricks for our Early Years children through to "Mindstorms EV3" sets that will stretch even our most creative secondary school students. The studio is a dedicated room equipped with LEGO resources and LEGO robotics facilities aimed at enhancing teaching and learning, while developing the skills and igniting the passion of our engineers and scientists of the future.
THE LEGO approach to learning is founded on a "4C" framework through which students are free to experiment and explore as they gain new knowledge. Students are encouraged to collaborate as they work through open-ended tasks and extension ideas, facilitated and guided at all times by their teacher.
The four phases are:
- Connect: the topic or task is introduced, allowing students to ask clarifying questions and build on their existing knowledge.
- Construct: every task includes a building activity to promote experimentation with collaboration and construct artefacts that can be recalled later.
- Contemplate: students consider what has been learned and share insights with each other.
- Continue: every task ends with a new task that builds on what has just been learned, keeping students motivated and curious
LEGO® bricks automatically engage multiple children, inviting them to construct together: discussing ideas and negotiating roles. They use the bricks as a tool for thinking and communicating, thereby developing an understanding and appreciation of each others’ ideas and contributions.
LEGO® bricks are naturally engaging to students. When they are introduced into the learning environment they boost motivation. It’s through this active, engaged experience that LEGO Education teaching solutions help to lay the foundations for lifelong learning. The hands-on solutions ignite children’s natural desire to explore and discover. Students will learn subjects like language, maths, science, technology, and engineering more effectively while improving and developing their 21st-century skills, like problem-solving, collaboration and communication.
LEGO Education naturally inspires young minds to explore numbers, shapes and colors, and problem solving through playing together. Children learn to experiment by continuously constructing and deconstructing their different creations. As they construct together, the colorful bricks and figures provide engaging, hands-on ways to understand concepts such as simple addition and subtraction.
LEGO MINDSTORM EDUCATION EV3 brings students’ creations to life with an easy and intuitive icon-base programming interface. These sets combine the versatility of the LEGO building system with advanced robotic technology allowing students to create and command robots. Students can design, build and test robots that can complete complex tasks, record live data, respond to environmental changes and more. The only limit is students’ imagination!
